DISCOVER LOGROÑO

Logroño, wine capital and point of meeting of The Way of St. James

Logroño, the capital of La Rioja, is a city that lives by and for wine. Its history, urban layout and identity are marked by a viticulture culture that can be felt in every corner. Located at a strategic point where the French Way of St. James, the Jacobean Way of the Ebro and the Ignatian Way converge, the city has developed an open and hospitable character, born from the constant passing of travelers and pilgrims.

Although for many visitors wine is associated with the bustling bars in Laurel and San Juan streets, Logroño offers much more. In recent years, it has successfully shown that its relationship with wine is not only gastronomic but also cultural, historical and scenic. Just a few minutes away from the city center, visitors can see this for themselves. The outskirts are surrounded by vineyards, with routes that can be explored on foot or by bike, offering views of the Ebro River and the Cantabrian Mountains.

This natural connection between the city and the vineyard has made Logroño a benchmark destination for those seeking to enjoy wine tourism in an urban setting. The capital of Rioja offers visitors the chance to discover the history of Rioja wine without leaving the old town, visiting unique locations where centuries-old cellars and historic wine presses coexist with cutting-edge cultural facilities.

Centro de la Cultura del Rioja

The Centro de la Cultura del Rioja, located right on the Way of St. James, is the main venue dedicated to promoting wine culture in the city. It occupies the renowned Casa de la Virgen, a 16th-century building restored within an urban regeneration project promoted by the Logroño City Council.

The center combines contemporary architecture with heritage elements such as stone presses and cellars, spread over more than 3,500 square meters. Its engaging program of activities and exhibitions aims to bring wine closer to all audiences, energize the old town, and strengthen Logroño’s identity as the Capital of Rioja Culture.

Los calados de San Gregorio

Under the city’s oldest streets, such as Ruavieja or Barriocepo, lies a network of cellars that bear witness to Logroño’s long winemaking tradition. Some can still be visited, such as the one beneath the  Colegio de Ingenieros, known as the Casa del Pozo, or the one beneath the Colegio de Arquitectos, located in the former Palace of the Marquis of Legarda.

These underground wineries, with their stone vaults and ventilation shafts —called “tuferas”— are part of Logroño’s historical heritage and recall a time when each family made its own wine.

Today, these spaces, along with the city’s wineries make Logroño a place that truly lives around wine: a destination where history, culture, and oenology naturally intertwine, offering visitors a complete and authentic experience.

Espacio Lagares

Just a few meters from the Rioja Culture Center lies the so-called “golden triangle” of wine tourism in Logroño, formed by Espacio Lagares and the San Gregorio Cellar. Both spaces allow visitors to explore the city’s winemaking history from its very beginnings.

Opposite it, Espacio Lagares preserves archaeological remains of old wine vats and presses. It is one of the few urban wine presses from the 17th century still standing in the old town and shows the evolution of winemaking techniques from ancient times to today.
